| Mental Illness: Anka’s Story |
| |
When Anka* was referred by a neighbourhood centre to a United Way of Peel Region funded agency for help, she was suicidal. In war-torn Bosnia, she had watched silently as the police arrested her husband. He was taken away to a concentration camp and brutally killed. Through a refugee program, Anka and her two daughters, aged 14 and 16 at the time, escaped to Canada. However, the guilt Anka felt about not doing anything to help her husband was incapacitating her. She was also angry that her husband hadn’t resisted his arrest and she was mortified that she didn’t know the location of her husband’s body and that she didn’t give him a proper burial.
Adding to Anka’s depression and guilt was the fact that her daughters were repeatedly sexually assaulted while awaiting transfer from the refugee camp. The helplessness Anka felt at being unable to protect the girls drove her to despair. She vowed that, once her daughters could be found homes in Peel, she would kill herself.
Eventually, the counsellor was able to help Anka see her situation from a different perspective. Anka understood that her husband had calmly walked away with the police in order to sacrifice himself for his family. He wanted his wife and children to survive and was protecting them from being involved.
This revelation had a miraculous effect on Anka. The burden of guilt she experienced was lifted. She realized that she and her children could have a new life in Canada. Between 2000 and 2002, Anka’s daughters received counselling for the sexual abuse they had experienced at the Bosnian refugee camp. Now they’re both university students and doing fine.
After receiving counselling, Anka still needed social assistance and some help in getting settled, but a huge amount of work had been accomplished in alleviating her post-traumatic stress, thanks to Family Services of Peel.

... that the immigrant population in Peel is growing at a faster rate than the Canadian-born population? The current and future success of the region is dependent on immigrants. Unfortunately, new immigrants face significant barriers to equitable participation in our society, such as language, lack of Canadian experience, difficulty in having trade and professional credentials from their homelands recognized, and other forms of discrimination. | |
