‘Portraits of Peel: Facing the Facts’ tackles woman abuse

When it was first issued last May by United Way of Peel Region, the Fair Share Task Force, the Region of Peel and the Social Planning Council of Peel, Portraits of Peel: Facing the Facts stunned citizens and politicians alike. Who would believe that more than 115,000 people in our region live below the poverty line? How could three in 10 children not be ready to learn when they start school? Why, with 8.7% of Ontario’s population, does Peel receive only 4.4% of the province’s social services funding? Facing the Facts demonstrated that explosive population growth, diversity, poverty and inequitable federal and provincial funding are having a dramatic impact on the children and families of the region.
Now this alarming report has been expanded and reissued, ready to rock readers with another critical issue in Peel: woman abuse. Did you know that one in eight women in Peel (more than 62,000 individuals) are abused by their intimate partner? This is just one of many startling statistics appearing in the new edition of Facing the Facts. The section on woman abuse also addresses the cycle of violence syndrome – in other words, the impact on children, who often suffer emotionally, cognitively and physically from exposure to brutality against their mother. Children who are exposed to abuse have an increased chance of being abused and/or being abusive as an adult. Boys whose fathers abused their mothers have 1,000% greater likelihood of abusing their partners as adults than sons of non-violent partners.
There are many organizations in Peel that deal with violence against women. Catherine Fox is Executive Director of Interim Place (I & II), the only organization in Peel devoted solely to providing shelter, interim support and counselling for abused women and their children. She explains that staff, volunteers and board members work tirelessly to fundraise and increase awareness for an organization that serves women and children during the most vulnerable time in their lives. “There has been an increase in the number of women we serve who are also experiencing other challenges in their lives such as health and immigration issues,” said Fox. “More funding is needed so that more services can be provided.”
Catholic Family Services of Peel-Dufferin’s 2004-05 annual report addresses the issue of under-funding succinctly by stating, “…it reduces our ability to respond to need in a timely manner and thus waiting lists are created.”

Day of Caring demonstrates strong community spirit

United Way of Peel Region’s Day of Caring on September 30 was a huge success as 149 volunteers from 17 organizations generously donated their time, energy and skills to 13 United Way-funded agencies. At the end of the day, the volunteers had completed 24 projects ranging from handiwork, painting and renovations to teaching computer skills, providing job counselling and taking intellectually challenged adults on a trip to the Ontario Science Centre. The volunteers gained first-hand knowledge of how their contributions to United Way support the community.
The following companies and organizations offered volunteers: Alcatel, ARI Financial, Canada Post, CIBA Vision Canada Inc., DaimlerChrysler Canada, DuPont Canada, Edward Jones, GlaxoSmithKline Inc., IKON Office Solutions, MDA, MontShip Inc., Permatex, Petro-Canada, Region of Peel, Trillium Health Centre, UPS Canada, and UPS-SCS Logistics. In addition to them, United Way thanks Drew McLennan, owner of the Tim Hortons franchise at Dixie Road and Aimco Boulevard, for kindly donating breakfast for the volunteers.
“We are so proud of our volunteers who take part in Day of Caring by going out into the community to make a difference at our funded agencies,” said United Way’s Executive Director, Shelley White, at the breakfast rally. “Their efforts enable agency personnel to concentrate their resources on providing direct services.”
United Way of Peel Region has had organized Days of Caring for several years. Since 2000, more than 1,000 volunteers have contributed over 7,000 hours to the community through the event.

Elder Abuse Awareness Day on October 19

Supporting seniors to live healthy, independent lives is one of United Way of Peel Region’s funding priorities. One of the challenges facing seniors is elder abuse. There are several definitions of elder abuse and one of the most widely accepted is from the World Health Organization: “Single or repeated acts, or lack of appropriate action, occurring within a relationship where there is an exploitation of trust, which causes harm or distress to an older person”.
“Elder abuse is a difficult subject. It can have a number of manifestations that are not always recognized or accepted as abuse. Often, it is unintended, but poor care practices or ignorance is not an acceptable excuse,” wrote Maureen Etkin, Regional Consultant, Ontario Elder Abuse Strategy, in the March/April 2005 issue of Canadian Nursing Home. “Abuse is often referred to as a ‘hidden crime’ because it can be inflicted in very subtle ways in long-term-care settings where victims are vulnerable and unable, or afraid, to report it.”
Elder abuse has no boundaries – it can happen anywhere. It is not exclusive to any particular situation, socio-economic status, religion or ethnicity. The three most common variables in elder abuse and neglect are an unequal balance of power, dependency and isolation.
Abuse is not usually a one-time occurrence but a pattern of behaviours that have existed for a period of time. Most abused older adults don’t report the abuse and choose to remain in an abusive situation, even when the abuse is identified. It can take abused seniors years to disclose their predicament and even then it may still be several months before they are willing to act on it. So, as with most complex issues there are no easy or quick solutions.
The Region of Peel has declared October 19 “Elder Abuse Awareness Day” to draw attention to this serious community issue. Peel Senior Link, a United Way-funded agency, will present a public lecture on the subject.
What: Public Lecture/Panel Discussion on Elder Abuse
When: Wednesday, October 19, 3:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.
Where: Older Adult Centre, Square One

...each year, Interim Place (I & II) provides shelter and/or support to more than 6,000 women and their children in Peel? Due to lack of spaces and inadequate funding for more spaces, however, it has to refer many women (with or without children) to other services. | |
