New United Way-funded camp program shines
|
Twenty-year-old Michael Mikulak was putting on a puppet performance at a Longo's store in Mississauga when Cathy Hughes, Program Director for one of United Way of Peel Region's newly funded youth outreach services, "discovered" him. Cathy was so impressed by Michael's talent, she invited him to perform for the children at the new summer camp she supervises. Michael happily accepted, explaining to Cathy that he was autistic, lived at home with his parents and has been trying to earn money for the past few months as a puppeteer.

| Looking for leadership learners |
Peel Learning Institute (PLI), developed by United Way of Peel Region and the Social Planning Council of Peel in conjunction with several community partners, is currently considering a pilot learning program designed to assess, enhance and develop the leadership and management skills of human services professionals in Peel. PLI is planning to select 20 to 25 individuals representing a diverse cross section of the human services sector to participate in the pilot. The proposed program would enable participants to:
- Assess their leadership/management skills
- Use a 360-degree skills assessment tool
- Engage in one-on-one sessions with an executive coach
- Develop a Personal Learning Plan
- Enhance their skills by participating in a series of leadership/management workshops
To determine the level of interest in this learning opportunity, PLI would appreciate comments and suggestions from the community. If you have a comment or are interested in receiving an update about PLI's program pilot, please send an email to Valerie Timothy at peellearninginstitute@unitedwaypeel.org. Include the phrase program pilot in the subject line.
PLI is an initiative of the Peel Capacity Building Committee, a sub-group of the Peel Funders Consortium. The goal of PLI is to strengthen the capacity and ensure the sustainability of non-profit agencies in Peel Region by enhancing the leadership skills of individuals at the forefront of human services.

| New United Way-funded camp program shines |
Twenty-year-old Michael Mikulak was putting on a puppet performance at a Longo's store in Mississauga when Cathy Hughes, Program Director for one of United Way of Peel Region's newly funded youth outreach services, "discovered" him. Cathy was so impressed by Michael's talent, she invited him to perform for the children at the new summer camp she supervises. Michael happily accepted, explaining to Cathy that he was autistic, lived at home with his parents and has been trying to earn money for the past few months as a puppeteer.
On August 2, Michael, with "brother-and-sister" puppets David and Sara, put on a marvelous show for about 50 children. The theme of the show was sports and the importance of teamwork. Michael, David and Sara captivated their audience with a series of "laugh-and-learn" skits.
Cathy says the camp has been an overwhelming success, with the puppet show being one of many highlights. One of the reasons for the success was the new funding from United Way that enabled them to hire a full-time recreation worker to supervise activities and take the children on field trips. Cathy also expressed her gratitude that General Mills Canada Corporation, one of United Way's valued corporate supporters, provided funding for snacks at the camp.

| Donate a Day of Caring on October 18 |
United Way of Peel Region's fall Day of Caring is on Thursday, October 18. We're counting on caring employees from corporations and organizations throughout Peel to donate a day of their time to help out at United Way-funded agencies by completing much needed projects.
As a Day of Caring volunteer, your day begins with a lively breakfast pep rally at United Way of Peel Region offices. (You are responsible for your own transportation and lunch.) Following the pep rally, off you go to one of the 53 funded agencies to paint, do yard work, provide computer training, or any number of other helpful assignments. Agencies welcome this support from the community, and you get to see first-hand where United Way contributions go.
A list of volunteer opportunities available at United Way-funded agencies will be distributed the first week of September. Sign up is on a first-come, first-served basis. To ensure your name is added to the project distribution list contact Marilyn Caird, Communications Manager, Events at 905-602-3625 or mcaird@unitedwaypeel.org. Every effort is made to match the capabilities and interests of volunteers to a project.
Take advantage of this terrific opportunity to contribute to your community! Sign up for Day of Caring now.
