Day of Caring

May 15, 2008 and October 23, 2008

Each of us can make a difference in our community. Experience your chance on when you volunteer for United Way of Peel Region's Day of Caring!

Here's a great opportunity to see first-hand how United Way of Peel Region community fund donations are being used at one of our funded agencies.

How to Get Involved

Volunteers select from a variety of work projects submitted by agencies funded by United Way of Peel Region. The project summary list identifies the agency name, the type of project available and the number of volunteers requested by the agency.

Use the project list to match your skills and interests and to identify your first, second and third project of choice. Teams may be split amongst a number of projects or agencies dependent upon your preference. A maximum of 10 persons per company per project is permitted. A maximum of 20 participants from one company is permitted, unless opportunities exist following the registration deadline.

Your appointed Day of Caring Coordinator will submit preferred choices on the Company Registration form. Completed volunteer registration and media release forms must be received by United Way of Peel Region prior to the Day of Caring.

Volunteers are asked to a commit to a project for an entire day (8:30 am-4:00 pm) and are responsible for their own transportation. Agencies will provide all supplies required to complete their projects.

"Our campaign theme this year was United we are stronger," said 2007 Campaign Chair Linda Kuga Pikulin, President of The Pepsi Bottling Group (Canada) Ltd. "Our community really demonstrated its collective strength in this campaign. Thousands of generous individuals and organizations from all across the region joined with us because they believe in creating lasting positive change that makes our community stronger."

The 2007 campaign achievement includes $2-million from national employee campaigns and an additional $1.7-million that has been designated by Peel donors to other United Ways or registered charities. National employee campaigns are coordinated by United Way for organizations that have head offices in Peel and have multiple locations across the country. Donations raised through national campaigns are distributed back to the communities in which they were raised.

"It takes a lot to make a community strong," United Way Board Chair Dr. Colin Saldanha told the guests. "It takes a vital business sector, good jobs, visionary political leadership, strong social services, opportunities for people to participate in the life of their community, and, most of all, it takes people who care. Together we are building the kind of community in which everyone can thrive."

United Way's Community Fund supports programs, services and initiatives that focus on meeting immediate human service needs as well as addressing the root causes of our community's most complex social challenges.

"United Way would like to thank the community and the many generous donors and volunteers who helped us raise this record amount," said United Way CEO Shelley White. "I really want to thank the volunteers who are helping at our funded agencies today," said United Way's CEO Shelley White. "By giving their time and energy, they are enabling the agencies to preserve precious resources for frontline services."

Day of Caring is a United Way-trademarked event and is carried out in communities across the country. United Way of Peel Region has organized Days of Caring for several years. Since 2000, more than 1,000 volunteers have contributed over 7,000 hours to the community through the event. The next Day of Caring is scheduled for October 26.

2005 Community Achievement Celebration

February 2, 2006

United Way of Peel Region celebrated the completion of its 2005 campaign by announcing it has raised a record $12,531,054. Before an excited crowd of more than 500 people at the Pearson Convention Center, Campaign Chair Roland Sirois gave tribute to the extraordinary efforts by volunteers and the generosity of donors in reaching the record amount. "This has been a challenging year for many companies," explained Sirois, Divisional Vice President of National Starch and Chemical Co. "Many of us were shocked by the year's natural disasters that devastated so many lives. But people responded with incredible generosity and compassion, not only to Hurricane Katrina and the Pakistan earthquake, but to the needs in our own community as well."

Sirois acknowledged some of the campaign's many successes, in particular the strength exhibited by the food and hospitality sector. "We were thrilled to see the entire Pepsi family of companies come on board with enthusiasm. As well, Hershey Canada had a fantastic campaign."

Sirois also noted that United Way gained more than 120 new Leadership donors. They gave a minimum of $1,000 each for a total addition to the campaign of more than $180,000.

"United Way plays a vital role in building a strong and healthy community, one person at a time. In 2004, United Way funded programs that served more than half a million people in Peel," commented Savita Junnarkar, United Way Board Chair. "United Way addresses our community's most important social service issues: poverty, homelessness, family violence, the needs of newcomers, seniors, families and children."

Shelley White, United Way of Peel Region's CEO, expressed her gratitude for the tremendous voluntary support received. "I'm so thankful for the thousands of people who supported United Way in 2005," she noted. "Everyone involved in this year's campaign has demonstrated they want to build a compassionate community that genuinely cares about making people's lives better. We will not turn our backs on people who are experiencing poverty, homelessness, violence, unemployment, illiteracy, loneliness and discouragement. Every single gift to United Way is an investment in optimizing an individual's potential."

Attendees at the celebration included volunteers from companies and organizations across the region, representatives from United Way-funded agencies, organized labour, and community leaders. The evening's sponsors were Purolator Courier, the Clorox Company of Canada, Samuel Son & Company, Darton Property Advisors and Managers Inc., and Grant Thornton LLP. Gift-in-kind sponsors were Light Concept Design, Hershey Canada Inc., and Scrapalicious Inc.

Funds that are pledged to United Way's Community Fund will be distributed to the community through a wide variety of health and human care agencies that provide services throughout Brampton, Caledon and Mississauga. In 2005, 115 programs and services provided by 55 community agencies received funding from United Way of Peel Region. In addition, donations have been made through United Way of Peel Region to a wide range of Canadian charities and other United Ways across the country as requested by donors.

Most of the dollars are raised through employee contributions, corporate donations and special events. Community-wide events, such as golf tournaments, fundraising letters to individuals and corporations and donors in other communities, made up the balance.

Day of Caring

September 30, 2005

Close to 150 employees from 17 organizations in Peel Region rolled up their sleeves and picked up their paintbrushes, rakes, screwdrivers or a computer mouse today to demonstrate their support for community agencies. At United Way of Peel Region’s Day of Caring, the employees completed 25 projects at 13 United Way-funded agencies across the region. They also saw first-hand how their contributions to United Way support the community.

Day of Caring is more than simply a chance to demonstrate individual philanthropy: it also provides volunteers an invaluable opportunity to see, first-hand, where United Way donations go.

The following companies and organizations sent their employees to volunteer: Alcatel, ARI Financial Services Inc., Canada Post, CIBA Vision Canada Inc., DaimlerChrysler Canada, DaimlerChrysler—Mopar Parts, E.I. DuPont Ltd., Edward Jones, GlaxoSmithKline Inc., IKON Office Solutions, MDA, MontShip Inc., Permatex, Petro-Canada, Region of Peel, Trillium Health Centre, UPS Canada and UPS-SCS Logistics.

“I really want to thank the volunteers who are helping at our funded agencies today,” said United Way’s Executive Director Shelley White. “By giving their time and energy, they are enabling the agencies to focus their resources on providing direct services.”
