Spirit Awards

United Way of Peel Region's Spirit Awards honour the inspiration and passion evident in our very best campaigns. Spirit Award winners take campaign best practices and tailor them to fit their organizational and workplace culture. Year after year, our winners find innovative, creative ways to raise more dollars for the community.

United Way of Peel Region’s Spirit Awards honour the inspiration and passion evident in our very best campaigns. Spirit Award winners take campaign best practices and tailor them to fit their organizational and workplace culture. Year after year, Spirit Award winners find innovative and creative ways to promote team spirit, fun and cooperation while raising more money for our community.

Submission Guidelines
Nominees may apply for all awards for which they are eligible. Campaigns can be nominated by the Employee Campaign Chair and/or committee. Your United Way staff partner can provide you with nomination forms and assist you where needed. Forms can also be downloaded from www.unitedwaypeel.org. The Spirit Awards external Judging Panel retains the option, with permission from the nominee, to suggest alternate award categories. Only submissions that are typed and complete will be considered. All mandatory award criteria must be met. Also include a brief description of how your campaign meets the criteria (maximum length of one 8 1/2 x 11” page). The Committee reserves the right to display, distribute and duplicate entries. The decision of the judges is final. An application form must be completed and submitted for each entry.

All applications are to be received at the United Way of Peel Region office by 5 p.m. on Thursday, December 18, 2008. Please submit your application through your Resource Development Manager or Loaned Representative. All entries become the property of United Way. Winners will be announced at the Community Achievement Celebration.

Outstanding Agency Campaign Award
Presented to an agency employee campaign that has exceptional participation and promotes giving to the Community Fund. Awarded to both funded and non-funded agencies in two categories:

  • 20 or fewer employees
  • 21 or more employees

Outstanding Corporate Campaign Award
Presented to a corporation/company that excels in the many areas of corporate support to United Way. Awarded in three categories:

  • 100 or fewer employees
  • 101- 499 employees
  • 500 or more employees

Outstanding Employee Campaign Award
Presented to the employee campaign that has the greatest increase in participation and/or dollars raised. Awarded in three categories:

  • 100 or fewer employees
  • 101- 499 employees
  • 500 or more employees

Best First-Time Campaign Award
Presented to a new workplace campaign that has had outstanding participation in its first campaign. It recognizes new campaigns that have vitality, excitement, involvement and excellent communication. Workplaces that have not run a campaign in two years are also eligible. Awarded in three categories:

  • 100 or fewer employees
  • 101- 499 employees
  • 500 or more employees

Leadership Giving Campaign Award
Presented to the workplace campaign that conducts an exemplary Leadership Giving campaign. There is only one Leadership Giving Campaign Award presented each year.

Best National Employee Campaign Award
Presented to the employee campaign that runs an exceptional national campaign has the greatest increase in participation and/or dollars raised. Awarded in two categories:

  • 500 or fewer employees
  • 501 or more employees

Outstanding Joint Union-Management Campaign
Presented to a workplace campaign run jointly by union members and management that exemplifies teamwork, leadership and community giving. Awarded in both the private and public sector in three categories:

  • 100 or fewer employees
  • 101- 499 employees
  • 500 or more employees

Speakers' Bureau Award
This award will be presented to the Speakers’ Bureau volunteer who was an active ambassador for United Way throughout the entire campaign. This speaker delivered United Way key messages, emphasized the importance of the Community Fund, and told a compelling story to his/her audience. This speaker demonstrated public speaking best practices and a positive, enthusiastic attitude towards the United Way campaign. Speakers’ Bureau volunteers are employees, volunteers, and/or clients of United Way funded agencies, and senior volunteers of United Way of Peel Region.

Chair’s Award of Merit
Presented by the Campaign Chair to a company or organization that has gone above and beyond their traditional support during the campaign

It’s Your Say! Spirit Awards for Youth
United Way of Peel Region’s Spirit Awards for Youth honour the inspiration and passion evident in our very best school campaigns. This award was established in 2006. The It’s Your Say! Spirit Awards for Youth will be presented to schools that find innovative and creative ways to promote school spirit, fun and cooperation while fundraising for United Way of Peel Region. Awarded in two categories:

Pacesetter Award
Presented to a campaign Pacesetter that has a strong percentage increase in participation, the number of leaders, and dollars raised. Pacesetters are organizations that make a written commitment of support by
September 3, 2008.

2007 Spirit Award Winners

Best First-Time Campaign
This award is presented to a workplace campaign that has had outstanding participation in its first-ever campaign for United Way of Peel Region.
Winners: 100 or fewer employees: Hill’s Pet Nutrition Canada Inc, Mississauga
100 or more employees: Hatch Ltd., Mississauga

Outstanding Public-Sector Joint Union-Management Campaign
This award is given to the public-sector campaign that best exemplifies teamwork and leadership and involves both management and union employees.
Winners: Less than 500 employees: Hydro One Brampton and Canadian Auto Workers Local 1285 and International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 636
500 or more employees: The City of Mississauga and Canadian Union of Public Employees Local 66, International Association of Fire Fighters Local 1212, International Association of Machinists District Lodge 78 and Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1527

Outstanding Private-Sector Joint Union-Management Campaign
This award is presented to the private-sector campaign that best exemplifies teamwork and leadership and involves both management and union employees.
Winners: Less than 100 employees: ESAB Group Canada Inc. and United Steelworkers Local 9042, Mississauga
More than 100 employees: ArcelorMittal and United Steelworkers Local 7536, Brampton

Outstanding Agency Campaign Award
This award is presented to a United Way-funded agency that has exceptional participation in its employee United Way campaign.
Winners: Less than 20 employees: Rapport Youth & Family Services, Brampton AND Canadian Hearing Society, Mississauga

Speakers' Bureau Award
This award is presented to the member of United Way's Speakers' Bureau who is an outstanding ambassador and public speaker.
Winner: Carmine Spadafora, St. Leonard’s Place (Peel), Brampton

Outstanding Leadership Giving Campaign Award
This award is given to the organization that conducted an exemplary Leadership Giving Campaign. A Leadership donor gives more than $1,000 annually to United Way.
Winner: Bantrel Co., Mississauga

Outstanding Corporate Campaign Award
This award is presented to a corporation that excels in the many areas of corporate support for United Way.
Winners: Less than 500 employees: The Pepsi Bottling Group (Canada) Co., Mississauga

Outstanding Employee Campaign Award
This award is presented to the workplace campaigns with the most outstanding efforts of individuals or teams that ran exceptional employee campaigns.

101-499 employees: ESI Canada Inc., Mississauga
500 or more employees: Desjardins General Insurance Group, Mississauga

Best National Employee Campaign
This award is presented to the employee campaign that runs an exceptional national campaign and has the greatest increase in participation and/or dollars raised.
Winners: 500 or fewer employees: Kimberly-Clark Inc., Mississauga
501 or more employees: GE Canada, Mississauga

'It's Your Say' Spirit Award for Youth
This award recognizes the vital importance of involving young people in United Way's work of building a strong and vibrant community for everyone.
Winners: Trelawny Public School, Mississauga
Sandalwood Heights Secondary School, Brampton

Chair's Award of Merit
A campaign of excellence is chosen to receive this special recognition.
Winner: Hewlett-Packard Canada Co., Mississauga

The winners were selected by the following panel of judges: United Way Board member Louroz Mercader; CEO Shelley White; Resource Development Director Ted Fauteux and Managers Susan Mortimer and Katryna Indewey; and April Bodiam, PCL Constructors.
