Manager, Community Investment – Community Initiatives

Position type:

Permanent, Full-time

Reporting to:

Director, Community Investment

Purpose:

As Manager, Community Investment – Community Initiatives you will work with multiple stakeholders to contribute to the development of strategies and investment plans that meet defined community needs, outcomes and build community capacity in United Way focus areas. You will liaise with and provide on-going support to funded agencies and a range of partners; support the management of United Way’s community investments; and represent United Way of Peel Region at planning tables and working groups addressing regional or community-based issues.

Major responsibilities:

  • Through United Way’s community investment process as well as through successful relationships with agencies, support the implementation of United Way’s investment strategy through various funding streams that could include neighbourhood development, collaboration and capacity building.
  • Act as a primary contact to funded agencies, analyze and review funding applications through screening, provide agencies with ongoing advice and guidance, support the funding approval process, manage compliance, achievement of outcomes and deliverables in the Community Priorities Fund.
  • Develop and implement recruitment, orientation, training, development and evaluation of volunteers to support their key role(s) in the community investment strategy.
  • Participate in the implementation of outcomes measurement as a strategy to assess impact of UWPR investments.
  • Collect and analyze information from funded agency programs and services to assist in the development of key campaign and marketing materials.
  • Support the development of content for allocation materials and resources
  • Strategically participate in planning tables, community networks and working groups to address relevant community issues and priorities.
  • Foster and maintain relationships with community partners and stakeholders.

Qualifications:

  • Post-secondary education in Social Sciences or a related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Three to five years progressive and relevant experience within the non-profit, public or foundation sectors or relevant program management experience
  • Experience in research and analysis
  • Experience in program evaluation
  • Experience in community/neighbourhood development work
  • Experience in community engagement in diverse communities
  • Experience in report and proposal writing.
  • Experience working with volunteers at various levels throughout the community is essential.

Knowledge, Skills, Attributes:

  • Sound knowledge of the community and the human services system in Peel Region.
  • Ability to read and understand financial statements.
  • Strong organizational, analytical and time management skills
  • Facilitation, group problem solving skills and excellent presentation skills.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines
  • Proven ability to work independently and as a team player
  • Ability to work within a diverse work environment

Manager, Community Investment – Community Priorities Fund Lead

Position type:

9 Week Contract, 30 hours per week, $10.25/hour

Reporting to:

Director, Community Investment

Purpose:

As Manager, Community Investment – Community Priorities Fund Lead you will work with multiple stakeholders to contribute to the development of strategies and investment plans that meet defined community needs and build community capacity in United Way’s focus areas. You will support the Allocations Committee through strategic planning and investment strategies; liaise with and provide ongoing support to funded agencies and a range of partners; manage United Way’s community investments; and represent United Way of Peel Region at planning tables and working groups addressing regional or community-based issues.

Major responsibilities:

  • Provide leadership in support of the implementation of transparent, fair and accountable allocations within UWPR’s community investment focus areas through relationship building with funded agencies.
  • Provide leadership to the Community Priorities Fund allocation and Allocations Committee review processes by conducting a review of Funding Reports and the reported outcomes, ensuring funding agreement compliance and contributing to the development of funding recommendations.
  • Act as staff lead to the Allocations Committee and as a support to the Community Investment Cabinet on community investment strategies and funding recommendations.
  • Assist the Director of Community Investment with the development of the annual investment plan, the Community Priorities Fund recommendations report and other Board reports as needed.
  • Develop and implement recruitment, orientation, training, management and evaluation of Allocations Committee review volunteers in support of their key role in the allocation process.

Qualifications:

  • Experience in research and analysis.
  • Experience in program evaluation in particular outcomes measurement.

  • Experience working with and supporting volunteers at various levels throughout the community are essential.
  • Experience working within diverse communities.
  • Experience related to organizational policy development and policy implementation.

Stakeholder Engagement Assistant

Purpose:

United Way of Peel Region’s Mission is to engage with our community, through partnerships, to ensure people are cared for, connected and included.

The Stakeholder Engagement Assistant will provide assistance in the planning, development and implementation of stakeholder engagement tactics such as community tours, speakers bureau and the young leaders council.

Major responsibilities:

Assistance with the planning, development and execution of the following projects:

  • Speaker’s Bureau- Take the Lead on the planning, recruitment and training of volunteers for the 2012 Speaker’s Bureau program (videos)
    • Community Detours and Customized Days of Caring- Assist with the planning and implementation of stakeholder engagement activities
    • Young Leader’s Council- Take the lead on the planning and development of Young Leader’s Council Events such as the Annual General Meeting, Day of Caring, Mix & Mingle and Skills Development Series Events, Assist with building awareness of YLC Projects
    • Youth in Action Grants- Plan Information and Run information sessions on YIA program and conduct outreach to youth in the Peel Region
    • Assist with and participate in special projects

Qualifications:

  • Must be enrolled in full-time post-secondary education starting September, 2012 in Event Management, Volunteer Management, Fundraising, Communications or Media Studies at the College or University Level
    • Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills
    • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team
    • Strong relationship building skills
    • Highly organized, pays close attention to detail
    • Administration experience
    • Previous event planning experience
    • Project management skills and experience would be an asset
    • Previous experience working with volunteers would be an asset

Capacity Building Specialist

Contract, Part-time (0.5 FTE)

Reporting to:

Purpose:

The Capacity building project is funded by the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF). The Capacity Building Specialist will work with newcomer service organizations and ethno-specific, faith-based and cultural groups to support capacity development within the settlement / newcomer services sector as a whole in the Peel region.

The individual will work as part of the PNSG Secretariat and report directly to the Director of Peel Newcomer Strategy Group (PNSG).

Major responsibilities:

  • Identity settlement / newcomer services sector capacity building needs and assets
  • Provide customized capacity building support to organizations, faith-based and cultural groups of varying size as part of a sector capacity development process
  • Provide group support by creating a knowledge transfer platform for settlement / newcomer service providers through a series of learning workshops and forums
  • Identify and recruit consultants to provide support to the settlement / newcomer service sector
  • Implement ongoing capacity building support recommended by the PNSG Central Planning Table and sector partners
  • Maintain and build community linkages and partnerships through networks, participation with individual community groups and organizations
  • Act as a resource liaison to the settlement and newcomer services sector and mainstream organizations in the community
  • Prepare written reports and updates as required
  • Administer project expenditure in accordance with funding budget and the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) funding guidelines
  • Participate in PNSG committee meetings

Qualifications:

  • Four years progressive and relevant experience within the non-profit sector
  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in a relevant discipline is preferred
  • Proven experience in community development and sector specific capacity building as well as extensive experience working with the newcomer population
  • A solid understanding of the principles and practices of effective community development/community mobilization tactics
  • Experience working with diverse stakeholder groups including: funders, all levels of government, private sector and non-profit management and frontline staff etc.
  • Skilled grant proposal developer/facilitator
  • Significant experience working in organizational management including governance
  • Sound knowledge of the community and the newcomer / human services system in Peel Region
  • Excellent facilitation / communication skills (presentation, written reports etc.)
  • Solid organizational skills in managing projects, prioritizing and meeting deadlines
  • General knowledge of project budget and financial accountabilities
  • Flexibility to perform a wide variety of tasks
  • Access to own transportation

Fair Share for Peel Strategist

Position type:

1 Year Contract, Part-time (0.5 FTE)

Reporting to:

President & Chief Executive Officer

Purpose:

The Fair Share for Peel Taskforce is coalition of community-based social agencies in Peel who are working co-operatively and constructively to strengthen the capacity of the communities in Peel, to serve the residents who are in need of social and community health services. The Taskforce’s primary focus has been an advocacy role in relation to the provincial funding of these services and bringing together partners on collaborative policy development.

The Fair Share Taskforce requires strategic coordination and staff support and to ensure that its advocacy agenda is fulfilled in a constructive manner and that there is appropriate public awareness of the issues and to support its community capacity building agenda. The Fair Share for Peel Strategist will report to the Co-Chairs of the Fair Share Task Force and be accountable to the members of Task Force for performing the following roles:

Major responsibilities:

  • Establish effective on-going relationships with the nine MPP’s in Peel and their staff in supports of the Fair Share agenda (and, when appropriate, with federal and municipal partners and their staff). This will include providing information to government partners and discussing possible advocacy or communications strategies and maintaining regular communication.
  • Provide advice to the Taskforce about the best strategies to communicate the Fair Share Case and recommendations to government partners and to generally support the members of the Taskforce to execute their strategies.
  • Encourage and support the involvement of the members of the Taskforce in the advocacy and community capacity building plans of the Taskforce.
  • Prepare communications materials, presentations, correspondence and reports as required to fulfill the goals of the Taskforce in relation to its advocacy and public education roles.
  • Administer the business of the organization including managing the budget, supporting and direct the work of staff and playing a key liaison role in all financial matters.
  • Support the members of the Taskforce in building the appropriate community alliances with Regional Council, The Municipal Councils, the Boards of Trade and the Boards of Education in order to achieve the goals of the Taskforce.
  • Support the members of the Taskforce in establishing effective communication with the Ministers of the provincial government and their respective political staff and senior public servants responsible for social and human services and for decisions affecting the ability of the government to implement the recommendations of the Taskforce related to the funding of social services. This includes meeting with Ministers, organizing visits to Peel community agencies and other related strategies to ensure a high level of awareness of the Fair Share issue and recommendations.
  • Keep up-to-date on provincial government policy directions, decisions and political trends in order to provide an informed context for the development of effective advocacy strategies for the Taskforce.
  • Manage the media relations for the Taskforce in support of its agenda by creating and implementing an effective on-going communications strategy, through regular contacts with the media, news releases, press conferences, special meetings and media events as well as regular periodic meetings with editorial Boards of the various newspapers covering Peel Region and the GTA.

Qualifications:

  • Experience and/or formal training in media relations or journalism or a related communications field.
  • Experience and/or formal training in government relations, political science, public policy or related fields or a demonstrated capacity to work with various levels of government.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Creative, diplomatic and able to work well with groups to ensure timely and competent completion of assignments and tasks.
