United we can change lives! United Way asks the community to give generously

With only a few weeks remaining in its 2010 fundraising campaign, United Way is reminding Peel residents to pitch in and donate to help reach its $13.75-million goal and preserve the lifeline of programs and services that support our community.
“The last two years have been difficult for many people in our community as the recession has taken its toll,” says 2010 Campaign Chair Barb Leavitt, President of Baxter Corporation. “It’s only through the ongoing generosity of thousands of individuals, organizations and businesses that United Way of Peel Region can support people in tough times and beyond. As we approach the end of our campaign, I invite everyone in our community to give generously!”
United Way is the largest non-governmental funder of social services in Peel. Through the Community Fund, United Way supports a network of 99 services and programs offered through 53 agencies across Peel. People from all walks of life and in many different circumstances receive assistance. Examples include:
- Distribution of emergency food to impoverished individuals and families
- Telephone support for people in distress or crisis
- Emergency shelter for abused women and their children
- After-school, homework and breakfast clubs for children
- Counseling for families in conflict
- Mentoring for skilled newcomers
- Meals and social activities for isolated and frail seniors
- Assistance for people who have lost their sight or hearing
- Safe shelter for youth fleeing abuse and family conflict
“Last year, more than 420,000 people received help through United Way funded programs and services,” says Carl Oxholm, Chair of United Way’s Board of Directors. “Without this vital network of support many of these people have nowhere else to turn. By uniting and working together, we can ensure the assistance they need continues to be there for them.”
Donations to United Way’s Community Fund support services, programs and initiatives that improve lives, strengthen families and children, and build vibrant neighbourhoods and communities. In addition to funding local services, United Way draws together partners from many different sectors to tackle complex social issues, works to strengthen local social service agencies, and speaks out for social change.

United Way celebrates 10 years of Day of Caring™
|

MISSISSAUGA — Pumpkin carving, yard cleanups, painting and computer training were among the 21 projects completed today by more than 120 volunteers during the 10th anniversary of United Way of Peel Region’s Day of Caring™. The semi-annual event provides a unique opportunity for employees from companies and organizations across the region to spend a day helping at a local United Way funded agency. Through their experience, the volunteers learn more about community issues and the services supported by United Way.
“During the last 10 years we have seen tremendous growth in Peel and with that, an increased demand for agency services,” said United Way President and CEO Shelley White. “Day of Caring™ is instrumental in preserving agency resources and ensuring maximum funding goes to the vital frontline programs and services that hundreds of thousands of men, women and children in our community depend on.”
Over the last decade more than 2,200 employees across Peel contributed more than 13,000 hours of their time to United Way funded agencies through Day of Caring™.
“We want to extend a special congratulations and thank you to the Region of Peel and its employees for their dedication and ongoing support of United Way and our community,” said White. “While many organizations have participated in Day of Caring™ over the years, the Region of Peel is the only one that has participated each year since we started Day of Caring™ in 2000.”
In addition to the Region of Peel, the following organizations sent volunteers: Amgen Canada, Bank of Montreal, Baxter Corporation, Best Buy Canada, Citrix Systems Inc., ConAgra Foods, Coroplast, Davis + Henderson, Edward Jones, Gowling Lafleur Henderson LLP, HP Canada, Ingram Micro, Intact Insurance, Intuit Canada, PepsiCo Beverages Canada, Ricoh Canada and Tech Data.
The event was sponsored by TD Canada Trust employees serving Mississauga. Paint and related supplies were donated by the Brampton North Lowe’s Home Improvement Warehouse, and a pizza lunch was provided by Pizza Nova for volunteer groups of 8 or more.
Participating agencies were: Big Brothers Big Sisters of Peel, Brampton Caledon Community Living, Caledon Community Services, Canadian Mental Health Association, Community Living Mississauga, Distress Centre Peel, Interim Place, India Rainbow Community Services, Malton Neighbourhood Services, The Mississauga Food Bank, Peace Ranch, SELF, The Cross Cultural Community Services Association and the YMCA.

Peel hospitals blast through goal in first-ever joint United Way campaign
|

MISSISSAUGA — Peel’s three hospitals have proven that a little competition can generate outstanding results when a healthy community is the goal. In the first-ever tri-hospital campaign for United Way of Peel Region and United Way Toronto, staff, physicians and volunteers at the Credit Valley Hospital, Trillium Health Centre and William Osler Health System joined forces to raise an incredible $88,084. The result is almost triple their goal of $30,000, announced three weeks ago.
“Congratulations to everyone at our local hospitals for achieving such amazing results,” said United Way of Peel Region CEO Shelley White at today’s wrap-up event at Osler’s Brampton Civic Hospital site. “These funds will help a wide range of agencies and programs in our Peel and Toronto neighbourhoods. By supporting United Way, you are helping to create more resilient, healthier communities. Together, we are providing a circle of care for our community.”
Throughout the campaign, the three hospitals competed to raise the most money, achieve the highest percentage increase in donations over last year and demonstrate the strongest spirit. Trillium Health Centre received the Percentage Increase Award for achieving a 476% increase over last year in total funds raised. William Osler Health System walked away with the Spirit Award by sending a team out into the community to visit United Way agencies and meet their clients and staff. The Credit Valley Hospital won the overall competition by raising $40,147. To honour Credit Valley’s success, leaders from Trillium and William Osler immediately donned Credit Valley volunteer vests and showed visitors how to keep their hands clean to prevent the spread of infection.
“This campaign has been a unique opportunity for our three hospitals to come together in support of people in our neighbourhoods who need the services of United Way agencies,” said Matt Anderson, President and CEO of William Osler Health System. “The United Way is a critical resource in our community for our friends, our neighbours, our patients and their families.”
For their campaign, the three hospitals created the slogan, “United we can make a difference in our neighbourhoods”. The slogan helped inspire support and reminded the community that United Way and the hospitals work together to improve lives.
“We believe that by building strong partnerships with our peer hospitals and other stakeholders—such as the many agencies United Way supports—we can better serve our communities and our patients,” said Janet Davidson, President and CEO of Trillium Health Centre. “As three neighbouring hospitals in Peel, we already have a number of clinical partnerships. However, this is the first joint fundraising campaign we’ve ever done. It’s been a great experience.”
The success of the tri-hospital campaign brings United Way of Peel Region closer to its 2010 campaign goal of $13.75-million.
“As we all know, the economic situation is less than ideal; people are working harder than ever and they are busier than ever,” commented Michelle DiEmanuele, President and CEO of The Credit Valley Hospital. “Yet our staff, physicians and volunteers gave generously of their time, money and enthusiasm to make this first tri-hospital campaign a success. We invite our entire community to join with us in supporting United Way.”
One of the highlights of the campaign was an enthusiastic game of Jeopardy that featured Anderson, Davidson and DiEmanuele as the contestants. Anderson won the game when he correctly identified “our community” as the ultimate winner of the hospitals’ friendly competition.
“The issues in our community are challenging and complex, but not impossible,” said White. “By working together, we can create lasting change. The great results in this first tri-hospital campaign will help provide the resources needed to help individuals develop resilience, families grow strong, and neighbourhoods thrive.”

United Way announces PepsiCo Canada Leadership Challenge Grant
|

MISSISSAUGA — United Way of Peel Region is thrilled to announce the creation of its first-ever Leadership Challenge Grant, which will provide matching funds for new or increased gifts of $1,000 or more to United Way’s Community Fund. The 2010 PepsiCo Canada Leadership Challenge Grant, supported jointly by PepsiCo Beverages Canada and PepsiCo Foods Canada, gives individuals who are considering a gift to United Way an extra incentive to demonstrate outstanding generosity and concern for our community. The two companies have collectively contributed $100,000 to establish the grant.
“Stepping up to provide the inaugural Leadership Challenge Grant is one way that PepsiCo Canada can demonstrate its strong commitment to the community in which we live, work and do business,” said Linda Kuga Pikulin, President, PepsiCo Beverages Canada. “United Way creates lasting change in the lives of individuals, families and neighbourhoods in our community. PepsiCo Canada is proud to be an active partner in supporting this vital work.” Pikulin chaired United Way’s campaign in 2007 and continues to serve actively as a member of the Campaign and Major Individual Giving Cabinets.
PepsiCo Canada is a long-time supporter of United Way, both locally and nationally. This spring, the organization received the prestigious Thanks a Million Award from United Way Canada-Centraide Canada in recognition of PepsiCo Canada’s contribution of more than $1-million in 2009 to United Way.

United Way sets sights on $13.75 million campaign goal
|

MISSISSAUGA — At an energetic and rousing campaign kick-off this morning at the Hershey Centre SportZone, United Way of Peel Region Campaign Chair Barb Leavitt announced a 2010 fundraising goal of $13.75-million.
“There’s no question that our economy continues to present challenges for many people,” said Leavitt, President of Baxter Corporation. “Yes, there are hopeful signs that improvement is on the way, but there can be a long delay between recovery in the market and recovery in the community.”
Thanks to the generosity of its donors, United Way’s Community Fund provides a vital lifeline of support for the network of social services and programs that last year served more than 420,000 people of all ages in Peel. After government, United Way is the largest funder of social services in our community.
“Our campaign theme this year is, ‘United We Can’,” Carl Oxholm, United Way Board Chair, told the more than 300 people gathered at the kick-off. “By uniting the caring power of our community, we can meet immediate needs and address the underlying causes of social problems. United, we can change lives today and build better futures for tomorrow.”
Highlights of the event included a flash mob dance choreographed by Mississauga native Blake McGrath, a choreographer and judge on CTV’s So You Think You Can Dance Canada, and remarks by Mayors Hazel McCallion of Mississauga and Marolyn Morrison of the Town of Caledon. Troy Taylor, a volunteer youth mentor and former little brother with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Peel, shared the story of the difference the organization has made in his life. He is now pursuing studies at the University of Guelph.
“I think it’s fair to say that no other organization brings together people like United Way does,” said United Way CEO Shelley White. “From every corner of our community, people unite to focus on important social issues such as reducing poverty, creating opportunities for newcomers, stopping domestic violence, providing support for seniors, and strengthening families, children and youth.”
A special emphasis in this year’s campaign is the focus on increasing the number of Leadership gifts to United Way’s Community Fund. Leadership gifts are donations of $1,000 or more in a calendar year. Last year more than 1,100 generous donors contributed at this level.
United Way’s kick-off event was sponsored by TD Bank Financial Group. Other event supporters included Blake McGrath, Canada Dry-Motts, Casa Film Productions, Courtyard by Marriott, CueGo Audio Visual, the Hershey Centre and On the Move Catering.

Three Peel Region hospitals unite for joint United Way campaign
|

MISSISSAUGA — In a strong show of community spirit, leaders from The Credit Valley Hospital, Trillium Health Centre and William Osler Health System today launched the first-ever tri-hospital campaign for United Way of Peel Region and United Way Toronto. Together, the hospitals — which have sites across Peel Region and Toronto— are attempting to raise $30,000 in the United Way's Community Fund to support vital local social services, programs and initiatives.
"As hospitals we already work together to support our patients and their care within our hospital communities," said Michelle DiEmanuele, President and CEO of The Credit Valley Hospital. "This joint initiative to support United Way takes our partnership a step further. It is an opportunity for us to make a further difference in the community where we live and work through our personal donations. By supporting United Way, I believe we are really supporting each other."
The campaign was officially launched at Credit Valley today and will conclude on October 7 at Osler's Brampton Civic Hospital site. As part of a friendly competition, the three hospitals will vie for unique trophies and bragging rights for the most money raised, highest employee participation rate and the strongest spirit.
"Staff at our hospitals understand that, together with United Way, we play important roles in providing a circle of care for our community," said Janet Davidson, O.C., President and CEO, Trillium Health Centre. "Many services supported by United Way help people maintain their health and well-being. And after a hospital stay or procedure, programs funded by United Way provide vital support for our patients in the community."
For their campaign, the three hospitals created the slogan, "United we can make a difference in our neighbourhoods". The slogan will help inspire support and remind the community that United Way and the hospitals work together to improve lives.
"Each of us wants to live in a neighbourhood that is vibrant, safe and healthy," said Matt Anderson, President and CEO of William Osler Health System. United Way launches professional development series for emerging leaders

MISSISSAUGA — United Way of Peel Region's Young Leaders Council (YLC) today launched a new program to equip emerging leaders with the knowledge and skills required to make a positive impact in their communities. Step Up & Learn is a six-part professional development series featuring workshops on public speaking, communications, negotiation, team building, professional image and networking.
"The Young Leaders Council is excited to offer the Step Up & Learn series to cater to the growing need for leadership skills development for the next generation of leaders," said Raj Venkataraman, Executive Member of the YLC. "The focused training sessions will help develop personal and professional presence. This is a great opportunity for emerging leaders to learn essential skills, network with peers and discover their abilities outside their normal realm of work or school. We hope that these training sessions will be a foundation for creating a lasting impact in their personal and professional lives and the community."
United Way is working to prepare emerging leaders for success in their professional lives and in their roles as leaders in Peel Region. The Young Leaders Council is a group of volunteers aged 20-35 who are dedicated to creating a legacy of spirited giving and volunteerism within our community.
The skills development workshops will expand and develop professional skills through targeted hands-on sessions. The monthly workshops are open to individuals aged 20 to 35 years and will be led by Michelle Manglal-Lan, a facilitator with more than 15 years of leadership experience in multiple industries in both operations and corporate environments. Individuals can register for one or all six workshops at www.unitedwaypeel.org. Registration for each workshop closes at 12:00 p.m. on the day of the workshop.
Each workshop costs $15 and takes place from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at PriceWaterhouseCoopers, One Robert Speck Parkway, Suite 1100, Mississauga. Participants will receive a participation letter for each workshop they attend and a certificate for attending the entire series. The following workshops are being offered:

United Way and Peel Region invest in youth leadership
|
|
MISSISSAUGA — "Thanks to our Youth In Action grant, youth in our neighbourhood will have an opportunity to learn a skill and have fun at the same time," says Sherrise Gordon, 15. Sherrise is team leader of Out of the Fire and into the Kitchen, one of 11 youth-led projects receiving a Youth in Action grant, jointly funded by United Way of Peel Region and the Region of Peel. The grants, totalling $20,000, will fund projects including sports camps, workshops and mentoring sessions that aim to build confidence in youth aged 14 to 24, and help develop future leaders while improving neighbourhood life.
Out of the Fire and into the Kitchen (Mississauga) will receive a grant of $2,000, distributed through YMCA Peel Youth Village. The program aims to deter youth violence while teaching youth the essential life skill of cooking. During weekly sessions youth will prepare and share various dishes, and discuss the justice system with guest speakers from the community.
Youth in Action grants were developed in 2009 by United Way's Young Leaders Council, a group of volunteers aged 20 to 35 who are committed to creating a legacy of volunteerism and spirited giving within Peel Region. The grants will be distributed through several local registered charities that will provide financial oversight to the youth developing and implementing projects.
"Youth in Peel Region are restless for change," said Vanessa Mui, Co-Chair of the Youth in Action Review Panel and Executive Member of United Way's Young Leaders Council. "They are eager to tackle issues within their communities and act as agents of social change. We are excited to facilitate youth leadership and activism and empower youth to maximize their potential."
In addition to Out of the Fire and into the Kitchen, the following projects will receive Youth in Action grants:
Journey to OUR Mother (Brampton): A $2,000 grant, distributed through Dufferin Peel Catholic District School Board, will create awareness of First Nations culture and bring both aboriginal youth and non-aboriginal youth together in celebration. They will learn about the environment and working together to grow traditional medicines used by Aboriginal peoples.
Peel Environment Youth Alliance (PEYA): EcoBuzz Conference (Brampton): A grant of $2,000, distributed through EcoSource, will fund a conference for 350 students from across Peel to connect, collaborate and exchange ideas about social justice and environmental advocacy.
United Camp (Brampton): A grant of $1,900 will help build self-esteem in youth by providing sports camps for newcomer and/or underprivileged youth.
Get out! Get Active! (Caledon): A grant of $1,196, distributed through the Rotary Club of Palgrave, will promote youth leadership, healthy living and bring the community together socially by running an organized sports camp. The camp will take place once a week for four consecutive weeks in the summer of 2011.
Girls in Action (Caledon): A grant of $1,196, distributed through the Rotary Club of Palgrave, will fund a mentorship program where positive role models help instill confidence and self-esteem in young girls. The program will partner with local Girl Guides and Brownies.
Newcomer Youth Media Project: (Mississauga): A $2,000 grant, distributed through the Dixie Bloor Neighbourhood Centre, will assist with the successful integration of newcomer youth by having them document their integration through film, photography and journalism. The project also promotes youth leadership and civic engagement while the final products will create awareness of the challenges faced during the integration process. Project One: Operation Inspire 2 (Mississauga): A grant of $1,838, distributed through Gateway Centre for New Canadians, will continue to support dance workshops that encourage self-expression while mentoring youth on relevant teen issues. This is the second year this program has received a Youth in Action grant.
RHYTHM (Mississauga): A grant of $1,870, distributed through Rapport Youth and Family Services, aims to promote self-esteem, confidence and a positive self-image in youth by providing free dance classes. In addition to providing a safe environment where youth can explore their creativity, sessions will also include workshops on issues impacting youth.
The NUSAYbah Project (Mississauga): A grant of $2,000, distributed through The Social Planning Council of Peel, aims to provide female South Asian youth with a safe and creative place free from Islamophobia, racism and sexism. The youth will also have the opportunity to express themselves through art, specifically through a Digital Storytelling initiative.
Youth Productions (Mississauga): A $2,000 grant distributed, through the Gateway Centre for New Canadians, will allow youth to explore serious and sensitive issues in a safe environment while expressing their creativity through dramatic arts. Youth will create and perform plays that address youth related issues.

United Way and the Region of Peel offer neighbourhood development grants
|
|
MISSISSAUGA — United Way of Peel Region and the Region of Peel are jointly offering up to $30,000 in grants to charities and community groups interested in improving the quality of community life in Peel. The Neighbourhood Development grants totalling $275,000 aim to give Peel residents an opportunity to partner with local agencies and businesses to create resident-led programs and services that enhance the quality of neighbourhood life.
"The Neighbourhood Development grants were launched in 2008 as part of United Way's poverty reduction strategy," explains United Way CEO Shelley White. "The grants give residents an opportunity to identify priority issues and needs in their neighbourhood, and be active participants in creating programs and services to address them."
Previous grant recipients include a park beautification project that brought together volunteers, youth and seniors to revitalize a community park; a youth council that provides leadership skills for local youth; a seniors' wellness program that reduces isolation and increases independence; and a neighbourhood festival that brings residents together and promotes community pride and unity.
"These grants are empowering residents to work together to strengthen their neighbourhoods in ways that create hope and opportunity," says Anita Stellinga, United Way's Director of Community Investment. "Research has proven that a neighbourhood that works together is safer, healthier and more productive."
Interested applicants are invited to attend one of the following information sessions:
- Wednesday, September 1, 2010 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at St. Leonard's Place, 1105 Queen Street East, Brampton;
- Thursday, September 9, 2010 from 6 to 8 p.m. at United Way of Peel Region, 5170 Dixie Road, Suite 300, Mississauga;

United Way appoints Chief Development Officer

MISSISSAUGA — United Way of Peel Region welcomes Marilyn Friedmann as its Chief Development Officer. In this position, Marilyn is responsible for the strategic vision and leadership of all functions pertaining to Resource Development including annual campaign, major individual giving, planned giving, the endowment fund and special gift initiatives.
Marilyn holds the Certified Management Consultant (CMC) designation. Her extensive career includes more than 20 years experience in marketing, fundraising and management consulting within the private and nonprofit sectors. Marilyn previously served as Vice President of Donor Development with World Vision and more recently as a marketing and resource development consultant with the international development organization Mennonite Economic Development Associates (MEDA). Marilyn has also served with Nestle Enterprises, Manulife Financial, Mattel Canada, Sun Life Financial, Plan International of Canada, and several other organizations. “We are very excited to have Marilyn leading our Resource Development team,” said United Way CEO Shelley White. “Her strong business skills and experience, combined with her passion and commitment for poverty reduction and humanitarian concerns make her a great asset.”
In 2007, Marilyn received accreditation with the Partnership Brokers Accreditation Scheme in the U.K., a program designed to build skills for designing and implementing effective multi-sector partnerships for sustainable development between business, government and civil society. In 2006, she received the Certificate in Corporate Social Responsibility from the University of St. Michael’s College, University of Toronto. Marilyn holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Management and Economics from The University of Guelph.

United Way and Peel Region grants support social purpose enterprise
|
|
MISSISSAUGA — Registered Charities in Peel are invited to apply for grants up to $10,000 to explore the possibility of starting a social purpose enterprise (SPE). Social Purpose Enterprise Technical Assistance grants totalling $50,000 are jointly offered by United Way and the Region of Peel. The grant is designed to support social purpose enterprise development from idea exploration, preparation and development to project launch and growth. Organizations are encouraged to attend an information session on August 5, from 9:30 a.m. to 12 noon at United Way, 5170 Dixie Road, Suite 300, Mississauga.
“Social Purpose Enterprises are income-generating businesses that also support a social mission,” explains United Way CEO Shelley White. “SPEs provide individuals outside the traditional workforce with employment and job training, as well as an opportunity to earn income, improve their housing, enhance life skills and self-esteem, and create better connections to their community.”
United Way launched its Social Purpose Enterprise initiative in 2007 as part of its poverty reduction strategy. The grants aim to help organizations identify potential business activities, conduct market research, assess organizational readiness and undertake business planning activities. Previous SPE technical grant recipients include a catering company that would provide job training and income for domestic abuse survivors, an eco-friendly e-waste management service that would train and employ seniors and youth, and a program that engages youth in producing and marketing original artwork.
“Successful social purpose enterprises assist in reducing poverty and help build more inclusive and healthy communities for everyone,” says Anita Stellinga, United Way’s Director of Community Investment.
The application deadline for the Social Purpose Enterprise Technical Grants is October 8, 2010 at 4 p.m.

New Chair and Board members elected at United Way AGM
|
|
MISSISSAUGA —More than 150 people attended United Way of Peel Region’s annual meeting today at the Lionhead Golf and Country Club in Brampton.
At the Board of Directors meeting immediately following the annual meeting, Carl Oxholm, a Partner with PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP (PwC) and long-time United Way volunteer, was elected Board Chair. Other officers elected were Barbara Leavitt, president of Baxter Corporation, as Vice Chair; Bobby Sachdeva, Partner with Pallett Valo LLP, as Secretary; and as Treasurer, Norma Trim, Chief Financial Officer and Treasurer and Commissioner of Corporate Affairs with the Region of Peel.
Carl Oxholm began his career in PwC’s Mississauga office in 1992. In 2006 he received the Chartered Accountants of Ontario's Award of Distinction. He is a member of United Way’s Major Individual Giving Cabinet, and has served on the Campaign Cabinet since 2002. He chaired the campaign in 2006 and has also served as an Account Executive. Additionally, Oxholm is one of the leaders of the PwC Charitable Foundation and has been involved in the launch of the PwC Grant Program, Volunteer Recognition Program and the Team Volunteering Program. He recently received a 10-year Ontario Volunteer Service Award in recognition of his ongoing commitment to United Way. Oxholm holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Toronto.
“It’s a great honour to be elected Chair of United Way of Peel Region’s Board of Directors,” said Oxholm. “I’m looking forward to working with fellow Board members, and United Way volunteers and staff, as we unite to tackle the serious issues in our community and create lasting, positive social change.”
The following individuals were elected to the Board for their first three-year term:
Sandy Fallon Sandy Fallon is Vice President, Human Resources of GlaxoSmithKline Inc.(GSK). She is responsible for the effective implementation of company-wide human resources programs for GSK Pharma as well as providing human resources services to the Consumer and Biologics divisions. Fallon started her career at Nortel Networks, before moving on to gain 18 years of progressive human resources experience at Becton Dickinson (Canada) where she was Director of Human Resources. She holds a Bachelor of Administration and Information Management degree from Ryerson University as well as a certificate in Human Resources Management.
Geovanni Mosquera, PgMP, PMP, P2RP Geovanni Mosquera is a Senior Information Technology Manager for the Region of Peel’s Information, Systems and Technology Services Division. He has over 25 years IT experience in government, oil and gas, banking and the software industry and holds professional certifications in organizational change management, program and project management, ISO 9000, and enterprise architecture. In addition, Mosquera is co-founder and a member of the Board of Directors of the Latin Project Management Network. He participated as a mentor to Peel’s Mentoring Initiative program and continues to provide mentorship in his various areas of expertise.

PepsiCo and GE receive prestigious United Way award
|

MISSISSAUGA — Today PepsiCo Canada and GE Canada, received the prestigious 2009 Thanks a Million Award at United Way of Peel Region’s annual general meeting. The annual Thanks a Million Awards are given by United Way of Canada-Centraide Canada to corporations, employers and labour organizations that have facilitated their employees or members raising $1-million or more for United Ways across the country.
This is the first time PepsiCo Canada is receiving the Thanks a Million Award. Three PepsiCo divisions are sharing the award: Pepsi Beverages Company Canada, PepsiCo Beverages Canada, and PepsiCo Foods Canada. Collectively they demonstrated strong commitment to United Way and the communities we serve, raising a grand total of $1,109,141. This was made possible through employee contributions, a corporate matching program, specials events, and an additional corporate gift of $50,000 from Pepsi Beverages Company Canada.
This is the third consecutive year GE Canada is receiving the award, proving they are passionate about making a long-lasting commitment to the health of the communities in which they operate. Spurred on by their campaign slogan: “Let’s Carry the Torch for a Brighter Tomorrow,” GE raised more than $1.1 million in their national campaign. These results were accomplished through an employee match program, spirited special events, an online giving program, and a national pensioners’ campaign.

Record numbers help out at United Way’s Spring Day of Caring™
|
|
MISSISSAUGA —Today 179 employees from 19 organizations across Peel united in record numbers to support our community by participating in United Way of Peel Region’s spring Day of Caring™. It’s the most participants at a spring Day of Caring™ since the event began in 2000 and more than double last year’s numbers. Collectively, volunteers today gave more than 1,000 hours of their time to complete 25 different projects at 18 local United Way agencies.
The spring Day of Caring™, generously sponsored by TD Canada Trust employees serving Mississauga, is an opportunity for employees to play a direct role in community building and experience firsthand how their contributions support local United Way-funded agencies. Volunteers worked on a variety of projects including participating in mock job interviews, helping out at the food bank, doing yard work, painting, gardening, spring clean up, and office duties.
“It is really inspiring to see the record number of volunteers,” said United Way CEO Shelley White. “By participating in Day of Caring™, volunteers experience a unique and rewarding opportunity to make a difference in our community while learning more about United Way-funded programs and services. They also save agency resources by undertaking projects that otherwise may not have been completed.”
The following companies sent volunteers: ARI Financial, Bell Mobility, CPL, Citi Cards, City of Mississauga, E.I. duPont, GE Canada, GlaxoSmithKline Inc., General Mills, Medtronic, National Starch, RSA Group, Region of Peel, Ricoh, Suncor Energy, Tech Data, The Pepsi Beverages Co., UPS and Wyeth Healthcare.
Paint and related supplies were donated by the Brampton North Lowe’s Home Improvement Warehouse and Pizza Nova provided a pizza lunch for Day of Caring volunteer groups of 8 or more.

MISSISSAUGA —Support our community and have a swinging good time while you’re at it! Register today for United Way of Peel Region’s 19th annual Leaders on the Links golf tournament taking place at Lionhead Golf and Country club in Brampton on July 5.
“All proceeds from our Leaders on the Links tournament go directly to our Community Fund, which invests in a vital network of social services for people from all walks of life,” explains United Way CEO Shelley White. “After government, United Way is the largest funder of social services in our community. Apply now for Youth in Action grants

MISSISSAUGA —Youth in Peel with a passion for making a difference in our community can now apply for funding to help turn their dreams into reality. Through the Youth in Action grants program, offered jointly for the second year by United Way of Peel Region and the Region of Peel, funding of up to $2,000 each is available for youth-led projects. Individuals or groups of young people between the ages of 14 and 24 are encouraged to apply. A total of $20,000 is available.
“We encourage projects that support youth in becoming more involved in their community, empower youth leadership within neighbourhoods, and raise awareness about local issues,” says Nicole Dupuis, United Way’s Volunteer and Youth Engagement Associate. “By leading and implementing their own community projects, youth are empowered as emerging community leaders.”
To receive a grant, applicants must work with an eligible sponsoring organization. The sponsoring organization must be a registered charity based in or operating in Peel. Examples of potential sponsoring organizations include non-profit organizations and schools.
Projects eligible for funding include youth-led and organized community events, awareness campaigns and youth leadership skill development opportunities. All projects should have a positive impact on local residents and neighbourhoods, improving the quality of community life.
The deadline for all applications is Monday, June 7th, 2010.

United Way announces 2010 Campaign Chair
|
|
MISSISSAUGA —Barbara Leavitt, president of Mississauga-based Baxter Corporation and a leader in the healthcare products industry, is taking on a new healthcare challenge. As Chair of United Way of Peel Region’s 2010 campaign, Leavitt will help improve the health and vitality of the Peel community.
“Although there are promising signs that the economy is improving, we know that there are many people in our community who will continue to need help long after the recession is over,” says Leavitt. “It takes all of us, working together, to bring about long-lasting change. United Way brings together people from all parts of the community to understand the issues and focus on solutions. That’s why I’m so proud and excited to be chairing the 2010 campaign.”
Leavitt has been president of Baxter Corporation since 2002 and has more than 20 years of extensive leadership experience in the Canadian healthcare industry. She is an active member of the Canadian Council for Health Services Executives Corporate Board, Conference Board-Canadian Foreign-Owned Executive Council, Catalyst Advisory Board, and the Board of MEDEC – the national association created by and for the Canadian medical technology industry. She has been a member of United Way’s Campaign Cabinet since 2005.
“We are thrilled to welcome Barb as our 2010 Campaign Chair,” says United Way of Peel Region Board Chair Michelle Cole. “Barbara and Baxter Corporation have been strong supporters of United Way and we look forward to a successful campaign under her leadership.”
As Chair of the 2010 campaign, Leavitt will lead United Way’s Campaign Cabinet, a team of high profile volunteers who are leaders in our community’s corporate and public sectors, organized labour, and social service sector. Together they will serve as ambassadors for United Way and work to raise the resources needed for local services, programs and initiatives that meet immediate needs and address the underlying causes of social problems.
“Barb’s extensive business experience, strong leadership skills, knowledge of United Way, compassion for those in need and commitment to building a great community for Peel residents make her the ideal Chair for the 2010 campaign,” says United Way CEO Shelley White. “It is a pleasure and a privilege to have her on board.”

United Way to invest more than $9.7-million in Peel
|

MISSISSAUGA —United Way of Peel Region will invest more than $9.7-million this year in local services, programs and initiatives that meet immediate social needs and tackle their underlying causes. More than $7.7-million of the $9,770,334 contributed to United Way’s Community Fund in 2009 will be used to support a network of 99 vital programs provided by 53 different social service agencies. This investment represents a slight increase over last year and will assist agencies in addressing the ongoing growth in service demands.
“Even though we are starting to see signs of economic recovery, we know that there can be a long delay between recovery in the market and recovery in the community,” says United Way CEO Shelley White. “Last year more than 420,000 people in our community turned to the services and programs supported by United Way, an overall increase of 6 per cent over 2008. We expect this growth to continue as our community continues to grow. Some agencies have experienced increases of as much as 300 per cent as job loss, stress and anxiety due to the economy continue to impact our community.”
Donors to the 2009 campaign also directed $1,909,116 to other United Ways and registered charities, an increase of $140,000 over last year.
In addition to supporting Peel’s social service network, United Way’s Community Fund will be used for the following initiatives:
- Grants to support the development and operation of 8 social purpose enterprises, which provide employment and training to vulnerable people at risk of falling into poverty;
- Grants for 12 neighbourhood development projects that will promote opportunities for people to become involved and engaged in their community;
- Youth in Action grants to support 11 projects led and organized by Peel youth to foster leadership and community engagement;
- Support for community partnerships including Success By 6 Peel, the Peel Poverty Reduction Strategy Committee, Fair Share Task Force, the Peel Newcomer Strategy Group, and the Mississauga Summit, that draw people from all across our community to work on key social issues;
- Grants to assist agencies in strengthening their organizational capacity to delivery high-quality services and programs;
- One-time grants, if needed, to address unforeseen financial circumstances that put agencies or programs at risk.
“Thanks to the generosity of our donors, United Way can support our community in tough times and beyond,” says Bonnie Waterfield, Chair of United Way’s Community Investment Cabinet. “Through our Community Fund, United Way supports services, programs and initiatives that meet immediate needs and tackle their underlying causes. We want to build resilience in individuals, families and neighbourhoods so they have the capacity to cope with challenges and thrive in times of constant change.” Today’s announcement represents the first allocations under United Way’s new funding strategy, Investing for Resilience. Under its new approach, United Way is focusing on building resilience in individuals, families and neighbourhoods by taking action in four areas: meeting basic physical and emotional needs; developing coping skills and abilities; providing economic opportunities; and supporting meaningful participation in our community.
United Way is targeting its investments in programs, services and initiatives that result in: Resilient people by:
- Supporting seniors to be healthy and live independently
- Supporting individuals with disabilities
- Supporting people who are vulnerable and susceptible to abuse, especially women and children
- Supporting and providing resources to people affected by mental health issues
Strong families by:
- Supporting newcomers and immigrants to fully integrate into community life
- Assisting families and children to have a high quality of life
- Empowering children and youth to reach their full potential
Vibrant neighbourhoods and communities by:
- Reducing poverty, eliminating hunger, and ensuring people have access to affordable housing
- Strengthening neighbourhood development efforts so that people can become involved and engaged in their community
All requests for funding are subject to an in-depth financial and program management review by experienced United Way staff and volunteers, including the Allocations Committee, Community Investment Cabinet and the Board of Directors. This process helps United Way identify trends in funded agencies and assists in future strategic planning. The predominant trends include high turnover at the leadership level at agencies, an ongoing decline in charitable giving to the agencies, and increased demand for service. United Way works in several ways to assist agencies in managing these trends, including leadership development for agency employees, assistance in developing fundraising strategies, and advocating for fair and equitable government funding for social services in our community.

United Way launches Black Community Advisory Council
|

MISSISSAUGA —More than 150 guests were greeted by the African drumming beats of the Breadfruit Lane Charity as they joined United Way today to launch its Black Community Advisory Council (BCAC) and celebrate Black History month.
The Black Community Advisory Council is one of three councils created by United Way to build and promote inclusion in Peel Region. The Council aims to identify and address key challenges and gaps in support services affecting Peel’s Black community, which numbers more than 95,000. The Council is comprised of people from different segments of Peel’s diverse Black community, which includes African, Caribbean, Canadian, and anyone whose ethnic or ancestral origins are in Africa. The 52 council members represent different sectors including business, health, education and the community.
“As we launch the United Way Black Community Advisory Council, I look forward to the capacity building in the community and the synergy that will be created by the work of the enthusiastic and dedicated members of the Council,” said BCAC Co-Chair Wanda Marsman. “It is a wonderful initiative and we encourage everyone to get involved and contribute to success and growth within the Black community and the community at large.”
Highlights from the launch included a dance performance by Aisha Nicholson, a monologue by 13-year-old Isiah Douglas, and the invitation for all guests to participate in the Electric Slide dance.
“We are very excited about this partnership which gives Peel’s diverse Black community a strong united voice in developing programs, services and initiatives that will help our community thrive,” said United Way CEO Shelley White.

Campaign exceeds $12.75-million target
Community responds to United Way’s “License to Ask”

MISSISSAUGA —A crowd of close to 700 donors and volunteers responded with jubilation this evening as United Way of Peel Region announced that through outstanding community generosity it raised $12,835,582 in 2009. The total exceeds the campaign target by more than $85,000. The tremendous result comes during a time of great economic uncertainty and growing need for the services and programs supported by United Way.
“We believe people recognized that many of our friends, neighbours, colleagues and family members need our help right now,” said United Way CEO Shelley White. “This year more than ever, we had a license to ask. We are so grateful for the fantastic response.”
White was joined by Campaign Chair Bob Johnson, who retired as President of Purolator in December.
“It was a very challenging year as many individuals and businesses struggled with the impact of the recession and the uncertainty of economic recovery,” said Johnson. “At one point we thought we might fall short of our goal by as much as $500,000. But our end-of-year plea to the community reminded people of the need and helped put the campaign over the top.”
The money raised in the 2009 campaign will support a wide variety of services, programs and initiatives in Peel. This includes a network of more than 100 programs in more than 50 local social service agencies, community partnerships such as Success By 6 Peel, and grants to support neighbourhood development and social purpose enterprise.
“We know that 2010 will continue to be challenging as recovery makes its way slowly through our export-oriented local economy,” said United Way Board Chair Michelle Cole. “That is why it’s so important that United Way continues to focus on supporting programs that foster resilience. This includes meeting basic needs, providing economic opportunities, building coping skills and abilities, and aiding active participation in society.”

MISSISSAUGA —United Way of Peel Region today announced the recipients of the 2009 Campaign Spirit Awards at its 2009 Community Achievement Celebration held at the International Centre in Mississauga.
“The Spirit Awards honour innovative and inspirational campaigns that demonstrate team spirit while raising funds for United Way,” said United Way CEO Shelley White. “Despite ongoing economic hardships, our community persevered and helped us raise a total of $12,835,582. It is during times like these that more people than ever will turn to United Way-funded programs and services for support.”

Outstanding Joint Union-Management Campaign:
Presented to both public and private sector joint union and management campaigns that best exemplify teamwork and leadership. Public Sector Winner: Peel District School Board and Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation Locals 19 & 64, Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario, Peel Elementary Teachers’ Local
Private Sector Winners: ESAB Group Canada Inc., Mississauga and United Steelworkers Local 9042; and Canada Post Corporation, Mississauga and Canadian Union of Postal Workers, Public Services Alliance of Canada, Canadian Postmasters and Assistants Association, Association of Postal Officials of Canada.
Outstanding Agency Campaign Award:
Presented to a United Way-funded agency that has exceptional participation in its employee United Way campaign. Winners: PLASP Child Care Services (locations in Brampton and Mississauga) Family Services of Peel (locations in Brampton and Mississauga); and Catholic Cross-cultural Services (locations in Brampton and Mississauga).
Best National Employee Campaign:
Presented to an organization that runs an exceptional national campaign and has the greatest increase in participation and/or dollars raised. To be eligible, organizations must be headquartered in Peel and have locations across the country that run a coordinated campaign. Outstanding Corporate Campaign Award:

Speakers’ Bureau Award:

Given to organizations that conduct an exemplary Leadership Giving Campaign. A leadership donor gives more than $1,000 annually. Winners: Regional Municipality of Peel General Electric Canada, Mississauga
Outstanding Employee Campaign Award:
Presented to the workplace campaigns that show an outstanding increase in employee participation and achieve excellent results. Winners: IMS Health Canada, Mississauga; ESI Canada, Mississauga; and Citigroup Funds Services Canada, Mississauga.
Pacesetter Award:
Presented to an organization that takes the lead by making a written commitment to support United Way prior to the public launch of the campaign. Winner: Edward Jones, Mississauga.
Chair’s Award of Merit:
This award honours an organization that has gone above and beyond their traditional support for United Way. Winner: Baxter Corporation, Mississauga.

United Way announces 2009 Youth Spirit Award Winners

MISSISSAUGA —Children and youth across the region were recently recognized for their creativity and enthusiasm in raising funds and awareness for United Way. Several student groups received United Way 2009 Youth Spirit Awards, including the White Oaks Public School Outreach Club in Mississauga, which garnered two of the awards. The awards were presented to the winners at school assemblies or events throughout January.
The Youth Spirit Awards program is an initiative of United Way’s Young Leaders Council, a group of young adults focused on creating a legacy of giving and volunteerism that will strengthen our community.
“The Youth Spirit Awards honour the inspiration and passion evident in youth-led campaigns,” says Jennifer Szodo of United Way’s Young Leaders Council. “Youth play a vital role in the building of a strong and vibrant community.”
The following youth-led campaigns received Spirit Awards:
Biggest Bucks Award
This award is presented to the group that raises the most money.
Secondary and Post Secondary Winner: UTM Music Club
The UTM Music Club in Mississauga raised $1,100 for United Way through a variety of events including mini-concerts during lunch time at the university pub and a fundraising dinner.
Elementary and Middle School Winner: White Oaks Public School Outreach Club
The White Oaks Public School Outreach Club in Mississauga raised $3,000 through their “United for the Holidays” gift extravaganza. Students from grades 3 to 5 sold crafts at a school-wide craft show.
Uniquely Yours Award
This award is presented to the secondary or post-secondary group that holds the most creative and unique special event(s).
Winner: Chinguacousy Secondary School
Chinguacousy Secondary School in Brampton raised money and increased awareness about United Way of Peel Region through a “Wii day” where students paid to play video games during lunch. They also performed hair and make-up mini-makeovers. In the end they raised $350.
Helping Hands Award
This award is presented to the secondary or post-secondary group that holds an event focused on community issues with the most participants. Planning of the event should demonstrate extraordinary teamwork.
Winner: Harold M. Brathwaite Secondary School
The Introduction to Information and Communication Technology Course for English Language Learners class at Harold M. Brathwaite Secondary School in Brampton compiled a cookbook and held several United Way events, including a chili cook off, to increase awareness about United Way and the issues affecting our community.
Little Heroes Award
This award is presented to the middle or elementary school that demonstrates outstanding participation in its United Way campaign.
Winner: White Oaks Public School Outreach Club
White Oaks Public School Outreach Club in Mississauga consists of 130 students from grades 3 to 5. With the support of their teachers, they created 3,500 handmade gifts to sell at their “United for the Holidays” gift extravaganza. Their event raised an outstanding $3,000 for United Way.
About the Awards
A group of Sheridan College artists and faculty from both the glass and ceramic disciplines created one-of-a-kind art pieces for the winners of this year’s Youth Spirit Awards. The artists are Will Ruppel, Chris Tatarnic, David Thompson, Jen Van Herten, Sean Robinson, Marcelina Salazar and Mary McKenzie.
